Cape Breton Living Photo of the Week: St Peter's Canal swing bridgeSt Peter’s – Construction has started for the new two-lane bridge which will replace the old St Peter’s Canal swing bridge. The old one-lane bridge was built in 1936 nearing the end of its lifecycle, so I’d say it’s about time a new bridge is built to replace the old one. The new two-lane bridge is expected to be open to both boats and vehicles by May, 2017.

If you’d like to keep track of the weather conditions in L’Ardoise, located on the southeast shore, check out the Cape Breton Living webcams by clicking on this link: http://www.capebretonliving.com/webcam/ or simply clicking on the Cape Breton webcams link on the Menu Bar above.

  1. The existing bridge over the St. Peter’s canal installed in 1931 not 1936. The bridge was previously used in Ontario and was dismantled and installed in St Peter’s to replace a bridge that had been installed over the canal in 1919 which came from Quebec.
